Controlling the Connected Home

We were approached by the startup, Tyba, to help with the user interface design of a completely new physical / digital device for controlling the ambience of internal spaces.

Tyba is a London startup with ambitions to innovate in the area of the ‘Connected Home’ and The Internet of Things. Their first product is a new type of control mechanism for lighting, temperature, curtains and blinds. It combines the ergonomics of an analogue dial with a digital user interface, and its name is ‘Turn’.

Turn is installed on a wall like a light switch and the dial is manually turned to adjust the different settings of each functionality. The screen is swiped to change from one functionality to another, whilst also providing digital feedback on settings and the dial positioning.

The challenge was to create a simple clean UI with an intuitive user experience for a screen similar in size to a typical ‘Smart Watch’. We designed the whole UI, using elegant bold icons and a feedback dial for the manual turning of the device.

To give it a bit of magic, we also designed signature animations and transitions so it’s not just simple and intuitive, but visually striking too
